Cold atmospheric plasma therapy (CAP) is gaining popularity as a treatment for a range of skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and rosacea. It can also help to improve the appearance of sunspots, scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and can promote a smoother and more youthful looking complexion.
Here’s a look at what it involves and if it is the right treatment for you.
What is cold plasma?
Cold plasma, also known as non-thermal plasma, is the process of using gas that is heated to the point where the particles become ionised. In fact, plasma is considered to be a fourth state of matter alongside liquid, solid, and gas. This state can be achieved at relatively low temperatures of under 40°C, which is why it is referred to as ‘cold plasma’ technology.
CAP is widely used in healthcare to promote wound healing, treat ulcer, and even to treat malignant tumours. It is now gaining traction as a cosmetic skin treatment, which may be able to help manage conditions such as atopic dermatitis. However, currently one of the most popular uses of cold plasma therapy is as an anti-ageing treatment.
How does cold plasma improve the appearance of older skin?
The primary reason that our skin begins to show signs of ageing, such as sagging, lines, and a more uneven texture, is because collagen production decreases. Collagen is the protein that supports the structure and elasticity of our skin and helps it to heal quickly from wounds.
Cold plasma stimulates collagen production by triggering the natural healing response, so when it is applied to the skin during a treatment session, it sets this process in motion. The result is a firmer and smoother looking complexion that can look more subtle and natural than other more invasive forms of anti-ageing treatment.
The therapy also triggers the production of more elastin, which is another vital protein that helps our skin to regain its shape and texture from creasing and stretching. As we get older, we tend to develop wrinkles around our eyes, forehead and mouth because the skin gradually loses its elasticity and ability to regain a smooth texture.
How soon will I see results from the treatment?
For the first week after the treatment, you may notice some redness, soreness or scabbing. This is normal and will naturally subside. The full results should be apparent four weeks after the first treatment. It’s recommended to have follow up treatments at least once a year to maintain the benefits.
The treatment itself will take from between 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated, and is minimally invasive and painless.
The rate at which our skin ages can also be affected by levels of sun exposure, nutrition and lifestyle factors. Therefore, to ensure the best results from your treatment, it’s best to take a holistic approach and always use high factor sunscreen, stay well hydrated and stick to a healthy diet and a regular sleep schedule.
